ABOUT US

In 2000 Dr. Bill Allen, Carol Eakins and Becky Bridges decided to work with David Ernest of Prevent Child Abuse Georgia to establish Prevent Child Abuse Newton because of the murders of three local children (Riley Children) in Newton County. At the time, they also found that Newton’s DFACS had the highest screen-out rate in the state which meant that 70% of suspected child abuse cases were not pursued. The group decided to conduct a community wide assessment of parents regarding he understanding of issues related to child abuse and neglect as well as parenting. They found that parents wanted support, education and guidance through programs. Over the next two years a board was developed, the non-profit status was obtained, and in 2005 the organization hired its first staff person. The Nurturing Program was adopted as the parenting curriculum of choice.

PCAN is implementing the Nurturing Program in Newton County because research has shown that parent education for adults and adolescents before they become parents is often identified as the strategy most likely to prevent initial injuries to children. It also shows that children who have a stable home life are more successful in school. This program teaches specific parenting skills and addresses the nee to nurture oneself. Participants met for 2 ½ hours each week for 12 weeks. Dinner and incentives are used to encourage participation; research shows that these two components greatly increase attendance. PCAN seeks to encourage community involvement and support by training community members and leaders as facilitators and by requesting meal service and incentives from community groups. Pre and post data is collected to evaluate changes in parenting attitudes and behaviors. PCAN believes the Nurturing Program can serve as a community-wide framework for strengthening families and children.
